Winning is fun. To win we have to keep score. The
way we keep score defines the game.
Success, like love and happiness, is an emergent
property. It cannot be measured directly. One can only measure its
manifestations.
As the manifestation of success, growth has been
used as the measure of success. This has proven to be very
problematical. One can grow with or without success. Putting two turkeys
together will not make an eagle. To measure an emergent property, one has
to measure more than one of its manifestations. The best result is
assessment of the future implicit in the present behavior. To map this
future, we need to get a handle on systems dynamics.
We know all too well how to play a zero-sum
game. We know how one can win here at the expense of there, or
succeed today at the cost of tomorrow. A new social calculus would create
vertical, horizontal, and temporal compatability among members of an
organization.
Interact methodology is one for creating such
compability.
