By her tragic passing on June 2001, INTERACT has lost a most dedicated member and a staunch supporter. Her fond memories and valuable contributions will always be an integral part of INTERACT and the Systems View of the world in which she thrived and to which she gave her last true measure."

 

Martine Dodds had been an Associate of INTERACT since 1994, where she studied in 1990 in Social Systems Science methodology under the guidance of Jamshid Gharajedaghi (ongoing). From 1986-1994, she worked as senior researcher and consultant at the Institute for Futures Research, University of Stellenbosch Business School. During this period, she worked as principal consultant on several corporate transformation and organizational redesign projects (SA Chamber of Mines, The Edgars Group - with Jamshid Gharajedaghi; Denel, Houwteq, Nettex. Other clients included Transnet, Petronet, Old Mutual, The Rural Foundation; with research on development, community development and conflict resolution for the SA Department of Health, former Department of Development Aid, SA Department of Constitutional Development.



Aside from strategic planning facilitation, she presented numerous courses, seminars and workshops on the systems approach, the understanding and management of complexity, organizational development, management, TQM, conflict resolution and the global change processes transforming our operating environment. This included presentations at numerous IFR and international conferences, seminars, workshops, MBA courses in Interactive Management and Planning for the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, and in-house courses for many large South African businesses. She is a member of the International Society of the systems Sciences and has an abiding interest in evolutionary development and international cooperation in the creation of a world future worth having.

Since 1986, Ms. Dodds also conducted extensive research into human development, development planning, the creation of community forums within underprivileged communities, the health-care and community forum in Khayelitsha. At the IFR, she wrote, contributed to and edited numerous analyses, occasional papers, research reports, including the yearly Business Futures Publication (a synoptic contextual overview of the South African political, economic, social, institutional, ecological and resource environment).

Ms. Dodds completed her BA at Stellenbosch University (1971). BA Honours (1980) and MA (cum laude)(1984) in Philosophy at Stellenbosch University, where she is currently completing a doctorate in the philosophy of the systems paradigm. She has published numerous papers in local and internation journals and IFR publications. Aside from her association with INTERACT, she is currently associated on a part-time basis with the University of Stellenbosch's Department of Sociology and also collaborates closely with E.M. Lumley
